The Science Behind Rainbows

Rainbows are a beautiful natural phenomenon caused by the reflection, refraction, and dispersion of light in water droplets. When sunlight passes through raindrops in the atmosphere, the light bends (refracts), reflects inside the droplet, and then bends again as it exits. This process splits the white sunlight into its different colors red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet  creating the rainbow we see in the sky.

Rainbows always appear in the part of the sky opposite the sun, often after a rain shower when the sun begins to shine. The shape of a rainbow is actually a full circle, but from the ground, we usually see only a semicircle. Every person sees their own unique rainbow based on the specific angle of light reaching their eyes. Rainbows are not only fascinating to look at, but also a great example of how light and water interact in nature. Shutdown123
